How Compression Molding Works

The process utilizes heat and pressure to transform uncured rubber into a finished product through a series of precise steps:

  1. The Preform: An uncured rubber “preform,” shaped to the approximate size of the final part, is placed directly into the mold cavity.
  2. Compression: As the mold closes, the rubber is squeezed between the top and bottom plates. Molds can range from simple two-plate designs to complex multi-plate configurations, depending on part requirements.
  3. Overflow: During compression, any excess rubber flows into designated “flash” or overflow grooves.
  4. Vulcanization: The rubber is cured using both heat and pressure, resulting in a finished product that meets your exact specifications.

Advantages of Rubber Compression Molding

Choosing compression molding offers several distinct benefits, particularly for specialized or short-run production:

  • Tooling Savings: Lower initial mold costs compared to other methods.
  • Rapid Setup: Short setup times make this highly cost-effective for short production runs.
  • Material Versatility: Features the unique capacity to process stiff, high-durometer materials.
  • Efficiency: Produces the least amount of material waste during the molding process.
